Take Off Your Shoes *or* Spending time with domesticated Christians

Take off your shoes. Not
because this is hallowed ground, but
because your feet
are soiled
by the sins of the world.

In these walls we
speak the truth.

Well.......
our truth.

And the truth you've trod
in on these carpet squares
just doesn't suit us. So,
take off your shoes
and with them,
your heart and soul.

Hang them on the doorknob with your purse
so we can practice only our truth here.

Take off your shoes
Jesus says to his disciples.

Not because they contain dirty feet, though
they surely do. Boys,
I can smell them across the room!
Ah, signs of ministry
clung to and clawing at
calloused heels.

So, take off your shoes
even though
to do so
would reveal filthy feet.
Let me wash them
with the towel
from my waist.

Take off those shoes
that have followed me
through death, life, famine, feast, miracles and poverty.
Take them off because I love you - that's the truth.
